DAMI WANGXIAO, a division of Beijing-based VIPKid that offers live-streamed online classes for primary and middle-grades, has raised $80 million in a Series A round led by Tencent Holdings, Sequoia Capital China and Hammer Capital.
Unlike its parent company, which offers 1-on-1 live tutoring session connecting Chinese students with native English speakers for language lessons, Dami Wangxiao offers livestreamed English and math classes in small groups, with six students to one teacher. This service started as a project nearly two years ago, according to the South China Morning Post.
Founded in 2013, VIPKid claims its flagship tutoring platform now connects more than 700,000 students with 100,000 teachers in the U.S. and Canada. The company raised an undisclosed amount in a Series E round last year, on top of $825 million of investment capital it previously secured.
The company recently added new videos in an effort to ensure student safety, following reports of abuse and harsh discipline first uncovered by EdSurge last year.
