Brief Biography
Erin Sponaugle is a 5th grade teacher at Tomahawk Intermediate School in Hedgesville, West Virginia and the 2014 West Virginia Teacher of the Year. She has taught for 11 years. Erin received her BA from Shepherd University in Elementary Education and her MA in Educational Leadership from West Virginia University. She is a National Board Certified Teacher and a PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovator. Erin is a 2013 recipient of an Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award, the 2013 ING Financial Services Unsung Hero Award, and a 2010 Horace Mann-Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Fellow. In the summer of 2013, Erin studied the culture and education system of Germany through the Transatlantic Outreach Program. Erin believes that every child deserves an exceptional teacher; she feels the best part about teaching fifth graders is creating learning experiences that allow students to be excited, engaged, and empowered – with technology often being the catalyst that motivates students to excel.
