Dr. Gary Waddell is the Deputy Superintendent of Instructional Services. He formerly served as Associate Superintendent of Instructional Services and Curriculum Services Administrator for the San Mateo County Office of Education. Gary has previously served as Principal or Counselor at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in both California and North Carolina and has been an adjunct professor of educational leadership at the graduate level. He holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership, as well as Educational Specialist, Masters of Arts in Education, and Bachelors of Arts degrees. He is the immediate past Chair of the California Curriculum and Instruction Steering Committee (CISC) of the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA).
Gary has been recognized as the recipient of a number of awards in the areas of leadership and human rights and is a former North Carolina State Counselor of the Year. He has also been awarded the NCSCA Human Rights Award, the statewide Outstanding New Professional award, and the Jack McCall Award from the Center for School Leadership Development at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has researched and published on topics such as equity/student voice, professional learning communities, and collaborative schools and classrooms.
